The Paranoid Consumer

Interactive installation

2026

Prague, Czech Republic

This installation explores the ideas of surveillance capitalism, consumer culture and public engagement through interactive media in space. The experience puts visitors in a narrative disengaged from the reality of time, in a space where technology is mishandled, and out of place. The use of futuristic surveillance cameras, CRT Monitor, and digital screens, all seemingly existing in different points of time, is placed together to simulate the confusion and uncertainty of the outside world with respect to the inside space. The apparent business and over-stimulated expressions of the space indicates a sense of paranoia involved while engaging with information from a situation alienated from the society. Newspapers as media of information are treated as the accumulated evidence of the culture, and its history.

At this point, public attention is no longer harvested; through surveillance matrices they now watch what we see and listen to what we hear. Since the end of the last world war, we’ve been polluted by the noise of perfect things that don’t exist. Guilt-free gluten-free belgian chocolate, ethically sourced oatmilk caramel protein froyos, clubcard discounted triple ply toilet rolls….

What was blown up on peeling billboards and brought down into foldable sheets, is now dragged out in time. This 20-second misery is now “unskippable” and must be endured.

In the illusion of informed choices and consumer autonomy, the individual forgets that the highest form of choice is to not choose at all.

I’ll tell you this: paranoia is freedom.
